There are so many out there who just don’t understand knitting. I’m sure many of us have gotten the question “Are you knitting or crocheting?” Whenever this question is posed, I do my civic duty and inform people that I am knitting and how you can tell the difference (2 needles versus 1 hook). I don’t mind this; I enjoy enlightening people because it leads to a conversation about knitting around 90% of the time. However, yesterday was the first time I have come up against a knitting stereotype and to be frank … I was flummoxed.
I was sitting outside of a classroom when one of my teachers walked by. I currently had out my size 0, gold knitting needles and was knitting away on my clover hand socks. The following occurred:
Teacher: Colleen, what are you doing?
Me: I’m knitting!
Teacher: Why?
Me: Why not?
Teacher: Because in my country, when women knit, it means they are expecting to have a child.
Me: …
Friend: Well then she has been expecting for a while.
I was completely taken aback. Not that there is anything wrong with knitting for babies; but that someone thought that knitting was only to make clothes if you were expecting? Now, my mission in this world is to change how people perceive knitting. Using myself as a model, I was start to make myself clothes and show people the amazing world of knitting.
Speaking of my knitting, it went with me to class yesterday. It is a pure discussion class and I specifically went and asked the teacher if I could knit. The only bad thing was I realized I was only listening to the discussion rather than contributing it so I had to put the knitting down for a while.
My knitting continued to travel this morning when it came to breakfast with me and some friends !
In this picture, the knitting is hiding with my breakfast aftermath. (2 chocolate chip muffins, strawberries with sugar and 2 glasses of milk = yum … breakfast of champions)
And here is a better picture of it. I think I’m going to start a second pair just so I have a little variety of knitting in my life and you may be tired of seeing green too.
Have a lovely one =]
Expecting? You need to be married to be expecting. And to be married, you need a husband. And before you have a husband you need a … 🙂 Just too easy to pass up.
I would suggest your motto be, “Knitting, it’s not just for expectant mothers anymore.”, but you are too young to know the old commercial it references. I have no “hip” motto with a more current reference, but I’ve never been called “hip” (or hop for that matter) anyway.
Well, that’s all I have to say for now. I’m “expecting” better things in the future from this site, more than the average “knit-wit” or “old man” would do.
Good luck with your knitting, and remember to stay on “point”.
Love,
You should know by now
